NAN QI & TIAGODE de QUADROS MAIA CARVALHO
Nan Qi is a pianist and professor at the "Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte" (Natal, Brazil), where she also founded the university's Children Choir. Originally from Tianjin (China), she received a PhD in Music Education from the University of Western Ontario, a M.A. at McGill University, and a B.A. at the Tianjin Conservatory of Music. Her research interests includes transformative learning, multiculturalism, immigration issues, and community music. She often performs as part of the Qi-Cesetti Piano Duo, and has presented her research at several international conferences, in countries such as the United States, Ireland, Brazil, and China, and she has also published at the Action, Criticism and Theory for Music Education Journal.

Tiago de Quadros Maia Carvalho is a professor of ethnomusicology at the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Norte, having previously worked at the "Universidade Federal do Ceará" in Sobral, after completing his Master's and PhD at the "Universidade Federal da Bahia". His research interests and publications focus on the study of urban music, music and consumption, music and youth cultures, music education in non-school contexts, among others.

Developing Intercultural Music Competence: An Experience from a Brazilian Children's Choir
This article explores the development of intercultural music competence in a children choir created by a binational professor at a Brazilian university, and used as a laboratory for its music education students. Within a framework intersecting Ethnomusicology, Music Education, and Community Music, the research focuses on the processes of musicking and knowledge construction, and describes the practical ways in which the choir has been able to promote its main goals, creating a positive and lasting impact in its community, as well as in the formation of the student teachers.
